Longitudinal field evaluation covering 180 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh, tracking 14,000 cultivator interactions across three consecutive sowing and harvest cycles.
Smallholder farmers in central and eastern India face twin shocks: extreme climate variability and distorted price discovery mechanisms. This research brief provides an empirical assessment of how digital extension systems—spanning automated WhatsApp weather telemetry, digital mandi ledgers, and drone-assisted pest mapping—can transition smallholders from reactive crisis management to proactive agronomic planning.

Our findings indicate that purely text-based SMS advisory achieves less than 6% behavior modification. Conversely, when advisories are delivered via vernacular voice notes accompanied by short 30-second peer video demonstrations, adoption rates surge to 68.4%. Trust in digital advisory is heavily mediated by local Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) leadership and village-level Krishi Sakhis.
By digitizing harvest weighment, grading, and quality tagging at the village aggregation center, participating FPOs in Koraput and Bhopal eliminated predatory commission agent deductions. Cultivators received direct electronic bank transfers within 24 hours of produce drop-off, establishing an audited paper trail that enabled commercial bank working capital loans for next-season seed procurement.
